What Is BDR (Business Development Representative)?
A BDR, or Business Development Representative, is a sales role focused on generating new business opportunities through outbound prospecting. BDRs research target accounts, build contact lists, and reach out via cold email, cold calls, and LinkedIn to book qualified meetings for account executives, who then run the sales process and close. The title is often used interchangeably with SDR (Sales Development Representative); where companies distinguish them, BDRs typically work outbound into cold accounts while SDRs qualify inbound leads, though plenty of organizations reverse the definitions. BDRs are measured on activity metrics (emails sent, calls made) and output metrics (meetings booked, opportunities created, pipeline generated). The role is usually an entry point into a sales career, with a typical progression from BDR to account executive within one to two years - which is also why BDR teams carry constant ramp and turnover costs.
BDR (Business Development Representative) in Practice
In practice, a fully loaded in-house BDR in the US costs roughly $75,000-$100,000 per year once base salary, commission, benefits, tools (data, sequencing software, dialer), and management time are counted, and takes around three months to ramp to full productivity. Output varies widely, but a common benchmark is 10-20 qualified meetings per month for a ramped rep working a healthy territory. This math is why outsourced alternatives exist: an agency running cold email infrastructure can produce comparable meeting volume for a fraction of the fully loaded cost, without the hiring risk or the 12-18 month average tenure problem. The common mistake companies make is hiring a single BDR as an experiment. One rep is a sample size of one - if they miss, you cannot tell whether the problem was the rep, the list, the message, or the market. Teams that succeed either hire BDRs in pairs with shared playbooks or outsource the function until the outbound motion is proven, then bring it in-house with evidence of what works.
