What Is Email Deliverability Test?

An email deliverability test checks where emails from a given mailbox and domain actually land — primary inbox, spam folder, or a secondary tab like Promotions — across the major mailbox providers. The standard method is seed testing: the tool provides a list of test addresses spread across Gmail, Microsoft, and other providers; you send your real campaign email to them from your real sending accounts, and the tool reports placement per provider and per mailbox. Fuller tests also validate the technical layer — SPF, DKIM, and DMARC passing and aligned, sending IPs and domains checked against blacklists — and flag content elements associated with filtering. Deliverability tests exist because campaign metrics hide placement problems: an email in spam produces no bounce and no error, just silence that is easy to misread as bad copy. Testing converts that ambiguity into a measurement, before launch and continuously during sending.

    Email Deliverability Test in Practice

The working rhythm for a cold email operation: run a placement test on every new domain and mailbox after warmup and before the first real campaign, then keep testing on a regular cadence — weekly is common — because deliverability decays quietly and per-mailbox, not all at once. Read results at the mailbox level: one account landing in Microsoft spam while its siblings inbox normally means that account gets pulled from rotation, rested, and re-warmed, not that the campaign gets rewritten. Provider splits matter the same way — inboxing at Gmail while failing at Microsoft points to reputation with one ecosystem, and rotating sends away from the weak provider while it recovers preserves the program. Placement results also cross-check the soft signals: a mailbox whose reply rate quietly slid toward zero usually shows the reason in its next test. The common mistake is testing once during setup, framing it as a pass, and never testing again; the second is treating any single tool's composite score as truth when the ground truth is placement plus actual reply behavior over time.
