An ICP, or Ideal Customer Profile, is a precise definition of the type of company that gets the most value from your product or service and is most valuable for you to acquire - the accounts that close fastest, pay most, churn least, and refer others. An ICP is expressed in firmographic and situational terms: industry, employee count, revenue band, geography, business model, technology stack, and triggering circumstances such as recent funding or hiring. It describes companies; the people inside them are covered by buyer personas. The ICP is the foundation of outbound targeting because every downstream asset inherits it - lead lists are filtered by it, messaging is written to its pains, and meeting quality is judged against it. The reliable way to define an ICP is empirical: analyze your best existing customers for shared attributes, rather than describing the market you aspire to sell into.

Tight ICPs beat broad ones in outbound economics: a campaign to 2,000 precisely matched accounts routinely outperforms one to 10,000 loose matches on reply rate (relevance is visible in the copy), meeting quality, and close rate, because the message can name the exact situation the prospect is in. Trigger layers sharpen it further - the same ICP filtered to companies that raised funding in the last 90 days or are actively hiring salespeople converts better because the pain is current. The common mistake is the aspirational ICP: defining targets as enterprise logos the founder wants rather than the mid-market segment that actually buys, or defining it so broadly (any B2B company) that it filters nothing. If your ICP does not exclude most of the market, it is a wish, not a profile.
