    A cold email sequence is an automated series of emails sent to a prospect over days or weeks: an opening email followed by scheduled follow-ups, with the automation stopping the moment the prospect replies. Sequences exist because most replies do not come from the first email — follow-ups routinely account for around half of all responses — and because manually tracking thousands of prospects across multiple touches is impossible. A typical sequence runs three to five emails spaced two to five days apart: an opener stating why this prospect specifically, a short bump, an email taking a new angle or offering proof, and a polite breakup. Sending platforms manage the scheduling, personalization tokens, reply detection, and stop conditions. The sequence is the basic unit of cold email campaign design; targeting decides who enters it, copy decides what it says, and deliverability decides whether any of it reaches an inbox.

    A concrete four-step build: day 1, the opener — one specific observation about the prospect, one sentence on the problem you solve, one low-friction question; day 4, a two-line bump adding a small piece of context; day 9, a different angle — a relevant customer result or a reframing of the problem; day 16, the breakup, closing the loop politely. Each email should stand alone, since the prospect may only ever see one. Keep steps short — later emails shorter than the first — and vary send times within business hours. With reply rates normally landing between 2% and 15%, a sequence entering 1,000 prospects returns 20-150 replies, and cutting follow-ups typically forfeits half of them. The common mistakes: follow-ups that say nothing ("just bumping this to the top of your inbox" three times), sequences stretched to eight or more steps that harvest spam complaints rather than replies, and stop conditions that only cover email — a prospect who replied on LinkedIn should not receive email step four the next morning.
